Our History
The North Kent Service Center was organized as a non-profit agency in 1973 by a contingent of Rockford area churches ~ Rockford Area Ministerial Association (RAMA), seeking to help families in need of food and clothing. We first operated just a few hours a week out of the basement of a local business. In 2003, we built our present facility with 16,000 square feet and we are rapidly out-growing it.
Only 4% of our operational funding comes from United Way, FEMA and the Department of Human Service. Our original budget in 1973 was $1,000 and we served 37 individuals that first year. In 2009, we operate on a $443,900 budget, where 96% of these funds come from fundraising, area churches, individuals, civic groups, business donations and food drives.
As a United Way partner agency, the North Kent Service Center maintains high standards of operation, working closely with providers and others to prevent duplication of services. We are audited on a yearly basis. We draw our Board of Directors from a cross-section of ministers, church members, and business leaders. All of whom live and work in this area. We typically rely on our many volunteers to make it possible for us to multiply the impact of each donated dollar. In 2009, we celebrated our 36th Anniversary of `Helping our Neighbors in Need. `
